Not worth the Time and the Money

I am a student who happens to have read both John Hull's 'Options, Futures and Other Derivatives' and his 'Fundamentals'. To say that 'Options, Futures and Other Derivatives' is a good book is a great understatement, and can even be considered an insult. Yet, this book, which is targeted at readers who are not as acquainted with derivatives fails to impress. Through out the book you can feel how John Hull struggles to explain things in a simple manner. Sadly, his efforts have failed, and this is most evident when my fellow classmates had a hard time understanding the materials starting from Swaps. When we reached the section on options pricing, the book lacks the rigorous math that is needed for students to fully appreciate the beauty of deriving things like Black-Scholes. Overall, if you are a beginner, go straight to 'Options, Futures, and Derivatives'. This book is not worth wasting time over.

Ripoff + Worthless

Long story short, this book is a ripoff and won't help you much on learning about futures markets and options. As a 4th year finance student, I can without any doubt say my learning experience has never been this miserable! Here's a summary of what it's like:

1. Language: Wording is terrible. Definitions are wordy, hard to understand in general, and you will encounter typos quite often.
2. Practice questions: To see answers for the practice problems at the end of each chapter, you have to purchase a separate book that costs over $40 and answers for "further questions" are not even given unless you register yourself as an instructor on the Pearson website.
3. In some questions, data don't match (e.g. in one of the questions he requires us to find a margin requirement in Oct 2010, while the data he gives ranges from 2013 to 2015 - wake up Mr. Hull! smh..) as if the author didn't give a crap about "his students".

I spent 4 months with this book for I was required to read it for class, but I can surely say it is a book that gradually annoys its readers as time proceeds. Please persuade your instructor not to use this book if you are enrolled in a class dealing with this matter. I am serious.

why are we still playing these games in 2007?

By games I mean the fact that the answers to about a third of the questions are found in a solutions manual that, last time I looked (in early Sept '07), was unavailable for purchase. The answers to another third of the questions are not to be found anywhere. The answers to the last third of the questions are in the book--but these questions are not very interesting or challenging. Why must we play this game? Why not just put all the answers in the back of the book? (I know, I know: it's all about the money, etc. But still . . .)

As for the content of the book, I'm told that this isn't Hull's authoritative book (that would be 'Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives'). I feel like a sucker for having bought it. Is it good to make your customer's feel like suckers, Mr. Hull?

fascinating, full of invaluable information and very readable

My son's gone back to college. He left this book lying around on his bedroom floor, so I decided to read it. After all, I'm leading a Bible study on the book of Mark on Tuesday mornings. Knowing more about the New Testament, Its Background, Growth and Content, can only help.

Since the book was clearly a college text book I wasn't sure how far I'd get. After all, college texts can be really slow to read. But I actually finished the book in two days and could scarcely put it down.

Since I grew up with a "Catholic" Bible, I was fascinated to learn more about the history of intertestament times and the Maccabean revolt. The insights into all the different groups of people in Judea at the time of Christ help bring a lot of the Gospel stories and Christ's teachings to life. And the information on local customs, in action and in speech, are truly amazing.

Interesting examples included the use of Judean overstatement (as opposed to British understatement I suppose), and picturesque speech (logs and specks in peoples' eyes). Rhythm and puns that we miss in translation were quite fascinating too. And the insights into how texts were collected, combined, used and preserved make the whole question of where our New Testament comes from much more interesting and well-grounded, besides providing a logical background to modern arguments about "hidden" and "lost" books.

I liked the fact that the author didn't shy away from difficulties. He doesn't assume that every word in some favorite translation is perfectly preserved, but instead looks at how the translations were made, how changes crept in, and how well-researched the analysis of those changes is. I've always known that the historical evidence for the Bible rivals and probably beats that for the Roman documents I studied in Latin in school, but it was nice to see the arguments so clearly laid out.

I really enjoyed this book. I don't know that I'm ready to take an exam on it, and I probably don't want to go back to college to find out. But I'm glad my son left it lying around.

Conservative, Informative, Readable

This is one of the few college textbooks I did not have to use my highlighter to read. Metzger is extremely easy to understand; he structures his book chronologically, covering, albeit briefly given the spatial limitations of a short introductory text, most every topic the reader must understand to gain a basic knowledge of the context of the NT's development. The reader first will gain a basic understanding of the cultural context from which the New Testament arose, then will learn about the life of and sources for understanding of Jesus Christ, then finally will see the same for the apostolic age. His prose is lucid and lacks the pedantry of much New Testament scholarship, which will assist the reader in understanding such scholarship.

In assessing Metzger's positions, the reader must keep in mind that, as he plainly states in his preface, Metzger writes as a Christian. As such, he does not dispute traditional authorship for the majority of the New Testament (with the notable exception of 2 Peter), and argues that the evidence for Christ's resurrection is "overwhelming." Readers looking for the consensus of scholars on issues so contentious to conservatives will not find this book to their liking. That said, Metzger generally does well, given how little space he has, of presenting most sides of various debates and leaving it up to the reader to do further research necessary for finding his own opinion. Since this must be the objective of an introductory text, the text succeeds.

Good Reference, Good Supplement to Bibliology

It was a good careful read, and served as a good supplement for Bibliology. Properly structured and well written. I intend to keep it as reference.

One has to be somewhat familiar with New Testament history to be able to read through. Its not a beginner-out-of-nowhere reading.

I am looking to extend my readings on his work with his more controversial- The Shepherd of Hermas and The Epistles of Clement- which caused a bit of an uproar with Evangelical Christians. Even in the subject of Christianity- a little naughty tabloid-type preference never hurt.

I recommend this book for anyone in Bible College as a very good reference on the New Testament.

About the Author
Joe Ponder was born in 1988 on an Air Force base in Georgia. His mother was a psychologist before becoming a Christian minister and his father a retired United States Air Force Major. Joe comes from a family of aviators. His grandfather was a Navy jet pilot and his uncle an Army helicopter pilot. Growing up a military brat, Joe traveled the world. After high school, he moved out on his own and got work as an aircraft mechanic. While living in Kentucky, Joe frequented a lounge called the Cat’s Den, a gathering spot for local artists. There, he regularly wrote and performed poetry. Still turning wrenches as a mechanic, Joe decided to further his career and attended Middle Tennessee State University, where he met his future wife, Sam. Their son CJ was born in 2010. Joe’s son and book, Kings of Earth, celebrate diversity. CJ is mixed with African, Pauite Native American, and Creole from his father’s side and Laotian, Thai, and Chinese from his mother’s side. After graduating with his aerospace bachelor’s degree, Joe took an aviation maintenance management position in Texas where he lives with his family today.

Great Story With Something For Everyone

While the writing isn't amazing, the content is. This book offers good, solid writing with an incredible story. I met Mr. Ponder recently at Austin Comic Con and he warned me that the book had a few unexpected twist in it. The twists completely blew me out of the water and were so well done. The excitement and love he had for his book when talking to me about it clearly shone through in the writing and care for this story.

I had my doubts about this book at first from reading the blurb on the back, but after talking to Mr. Ponder I decided to give it a shot. It didn't disappoint and was very much money well spent. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes science fiction. There truly is a bit of everything for everyone in this: drug cartels, mechas, some romance, a little drama, aliens, and an overall captivating story.

Another thing I loved about this book is that the cast of characters are very diverse in race. As a parent of a mixed child myself, I'm always looking for books we can read together that offer a diverse cast of characters. I also liked how this book sort of touched on the subject of racism and some of the feelings of being a child of mixed race. It will be a good springboard for discussion when my child gets a little older.

I honestly couldn't put it down. Note and I cannot wait for the next part.

All around an enjoyable read

The book Kings of Earth has a great story line. I gave it a 4 star only because the writing isna bit choppy.

The book has a lot of diverse characters and is well driven by its main character Leo, while also following parts about his other characters Michael and Iris.

For me it was hard to follow all the "lingo" because new words for machines are in the book and I am not familiar with military lingo either.

The plot, along with all the twist and list if characters are what made this a good read. I would recomend to others.

About the Author
Educated at Harvard and Columbia, John McMurry has taught approximately 17,000 students in general and organic chemistry over a 30-year period. A Professor of Chemistry at Cornell University since 1980, Dr. McMurry previously spent 13 years on the faculty at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He has received numerous awards, including the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (1969-71), the National Institute of Health Career Development Award (1975-80), the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award (1986-87), and the Max Planck Research Award (1991). Professor of Chemistry Robert C. Fay has been teaching general and inorganic chemistry at Cornell University since 1962. Known for his clear, well-organized lectures, Dr. Fay was the 1980 recipient of the Clark Distinguished Teaching Award. He has also taught as a visiting professor at Harvard University and the University of Bologna, Italy. He has been an NSF Science Faculty Fellow at the University of East Anglia and the University of Sussex, England, and a NATO/Heineman Senior Fellow at Oxford University.
