From Publishers Weekly
Raw zigzags of color convey a girl's rage in this compassionate volume, which proposes a cure for anger. Sophie's temper flares when her sister demands a turn playing with a favorite stuffed gorilla. Matters worsen when Sophie's mother passes judgment ("It is her turn now, Sophie") and Sophie trips over a toy truck in the resulting tug-of-war. Infernal shades of orange, yellow and red liken Sophie to a shuddering volcano; a gray cat with jagged fur wisely gets out of her way. With the "PABAM!" of a slammed door, the girl races outside. "She runs and runs and runs until she can't run anymore. Then, for a little while, she cries." Gradually, a calmer Sophie begins noticing birds and ferns. When she returns home, relaxed again, her sister has abandoned the gorilla in favor of a tabletop puzzle. With minimal text, Bang (Common Ground; Ten, Nine Eight) gives a realistic account of embattled siblings and prescribes self-imposed solitude. Edgy illustrations with roilingly patterned foreground shapes and looming, dark backgrounds convey Sophie's inner violence; in particular, a quiet image of a ghostly gray beech against a midnight-blue sky is reminiscent of Van Gogh's Japanese-print-inspired scenes. Bang's evocatively illustrated book suggests no quick fixes; she treats childhood emotions with respect. Ages 2-7.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-Sophie is playing with her stuffed gorilla when her sister wrests it from her, knocking her to the floor. When their mother agrees that it is her sister's turn to play with the toy, Sophie becomes so angry that "She wants to smash the world to smithereens." She kicks, screams, and eventually runs into the woods where she climbs a huge beech tree, looks out over the water, and is comforted by the "wide world." Calm, she returns home ready to participate in family life. The text is appropriately brief, for it is Bang's double-page illustrations, vibrating with saturated colors, that reveal the drama of the child's emotions. Floorboards slant diagonally across two pages, echoing the agitation of the siblings as they engage in a tug of war. A close-up of Sophie's face with blue eyes blazing and pigtails flying is set against a fire-red background. Bang gives the ranting girl a huge red shadow. On the next spread, Sophie releases a "ROAR" so enormous that she seems to shrink off the page. The trees, outlined in bright red, mimic the girl's anger, then bow down as she passes by stooped and weeping, and finally sport bright-green outlines as she returns home cheered and hopeful. Sophie, like a missing piece, rejoins her family as the puzzle they are working on is completed. Pair this excellent story with Dorothea Lachner's Andrew's Angry Words (North-South, 1995).

From Kirkus Reviews
When Sophie has to surrender one toy to her sister, stumbles over another toy, and gets no sympathy from her mother, she runs furiously out into the woods, first to cry, and then sit in a huge old beech, watching the ocean until the tempest abates. Bang (Common Ground, 1997, etc.) captures the intensity of Sophie's feelings with strong, broadly brushed forms and colors: images of flames and a volcano; blue eyes glaring up from a red background that looks as if it's exploding; then harmonious, leafy greens and browns; and concluding scenes of domestic amity. This briefly told behavior-management episode explores well-worked thematic territory, but as in Hiawyn Oram's Angry Arthur (1989)and in contrast to the child in Betsy Everitt's Mean Soup (1992)Sophie finds a way to cope with her anger, quite laudably, without a helping adult hand. Outstanding book that helps to validate children's feelings
By A Customer
This is one of our absolute favorite books. I have given it as a gift to many friends upon the birth of a sibling or a sad family event such as parental separation. It's so important for children to know that anger itself is OK and that there are appropriate ways to defuse it that don't hurt others. Even as adults we can use the visually compelling reminders that physical exertion, time alone and being in nature can help to soothe angry or hurt feelings. As for the fact that Sophie runs out of the house, I have only two comments: (1) children, especially small ones, are probably better able than adults to grasp metaphor (my children have read this book hundreds of times and never attempted to leave the house alone); (2) Sophie is a big girl living in a safe seaside area and is apparently quite well able to handle leaving the house alone. We should all be so lucky. Completely agree with one reviewer's observation that the change in colors in the book, particularly in the outlines of trees and figures, is a wonderful way of reinforcing the message that feelings can change and become manageable. One of my all-time favorites!

Not sure why this book has won so many awards
By Amazon Customer
It's a cute book, however I don't think it is exactly worth all the hype it gets. I was very surprised, and I usually do not use this book to talk to my son about anger. It received an award, but I don't know that it teaches children to calm down the way that it says that it does. He advised that in order to calm down and go on her walk to find peace, so she must first run away from home after having a huge tantrum. That is something that I do not want to encourage with my child or give him any ideas about. Additionally, when she finally decides to come back home, her family acts as though nothing has happened. Not sure this book teaches the best values.

PLEASE FIX THE KINDLE VERSION TO DISPLAY FULL SCREEN!

We loaned it this book from the library because our three year old had a tantrum and hit someone. A few days later she told me "this book is my favorite" so I got the Kindle version. She memorized the words and reads it to me now. It helps her understand that her anger is normal and helps her process her feelings. We read "hands are not for hitting/words are not for yelling" books many times, but they did not connect with her. This one did.

DEFINITELY GOOD
By DAVID BRYSON
Robinson's 'Definition' dates from 1954. That places it after Ayer's Language Truth and Logic and Russell and Whitehead's Principia Mathematica, but before the published work of J L Austin and before the major works of the new school of moral philosophers, notably R M Hare author of The Language of Morals and Freedom and Reason, who saw the terms used in moral philosophy as expressing evaluations rather than as describing objects.

This was the heyday of the Oxford school of linguistic philosophers. It may be an unfashionable view, but I see their approach as valuable and important. Ayer had argued, for instance, that one does not actually see or hear things but only receives sense-data (Russell's 'sensibilia') of them, and that pure logic should be rigorously independent of human psychology. This kind of thing could not go on, and Austin, author of Sense and Sensibilia, was the stylish leading advocate of a view that asserted that the ordinary terms of human speech were philosophically legitimate. Austin was also the author of How To Do Things With Words, and I don't deny that that much of the philosophical writing of the time was clever-clever rather than significant in playing games with verbal expressions, but its real value in stripping out solemn and unnecessary abstraction remains. Where Robinson is admirably level-headed is in ignoring the aspects of the fashion that were fashionably trivial, in refusing to toy with words and in subjecting his contemporaries to the same detached analysis that he brings to Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Kant and the rest of them. I had personal experience of both Ayer and Robinson, and in comparison with the frothy velocity of Ayer the slow and taciturn Robinson could seem a bit of an old cart-horse. In terms of lasting significance it all reads very differently to me now. Ayer said the truth at the end of a TV interview in which he was asked how his doctrines had stood the test of time. 'Oh, they're wrong' he said.

Robinson explores definition along two axes. One is the simple distinction between informative and stipulative definition, a stipulative definition being one that legislates its own meaning, such as that i is to mean the square root of -1. However the main structure of the book is around the three issues of when we are defining words or other symbols, when definition consists of relating the symbols to the things symbolised, and when - if ever - a definition can be said to define things directly. Robinson is fully aware that language is an unstable and changing thing, and he is rather conservative in stigmatising certain uses of the word 'definition' even 50 years ago as being bad and slipshod expression. He loosens his logical corsets a little at this point and some of his prejudices, e.g. against the word 'psychoanalysis', have nothing to say to us now and are not central to his argument anyway. It seems to me that the word 'definition' has got out of the corral these days. We talk about 'defining features' in someone's life without implying that these features distinguish the person's life from everyone else's, and I see nothing wrong with that. In fact I would have liked Robinson to deal a bit more with the issue of when a definition may be partial rather than exhaustive. Robinson would probably have viewed it as wrong to 'define' a lion as a feline, as this does not distinguish it from a tiger or a bobcat. On the other hand I'd say that putting a lion as opposed to a hyena into the category of felines can reasonably, as a matter of accepted usage, be called defining it as a feline. At worst his severity is a good fault, far better than the opposite tendency, but I feel it gets out of hand in his special use of 'names' whereby someone's surname does not qualify for the term 'name'. In general I have some difficulty with his view that it is impossible to define individuals, on the grounds that it is impossible to discover characteristics that any individual does not share with someone else. He concedes that a synthetic definition, e.g. 'Julius Caesar is the author of the Gallic Wars' is possible, but not an analytic definition. To define Julius Caesar by his parentage and the dates, times and places of his birth and death would surely do the trick, even before DNA came to our aid, although it would not have helped anyone recognise Julius Caesar when he met him.

What is really impressive about this book is its author's refusal to be impressed. He is in no way polemical, but his concentration rarely or never lapses, and there are a couple of memorable sideswipes at Ayer and at Kant's notorious use of '7 + 5 = 12' as a specimen of a synthetic proposition, Robinson regarding it as a mere abbreviation. I think he describes the work somewhere near the start as being for the general reader. I won't actually quarrel with that, so lucid is the reasoning and its exposition, although he ought to have given a translation for the bit of medical Latin that he pillories at one point. This purports to be a definition of (I think) motor neurones, which it seeks to define by their colour, texture and proximity to one another. He was fully up to speed with the work of his contemporaries, and when he says that 'good' describes next to nothing he was clearly on the wavelength of Hare and co before they published a word. One of his examples has always left me uneasy, namely Aristotle's supposed 'definition' of what is translated as 'happiness'. Robinson accepts the standard translation 'happiness is an activity of the soul in accordance with virtue', but says briskly that this only purports to be a definition and is actually talking about the way to achieve happiness, not about happiness itself. I'm sure he's probably right, but I can never get it out of my head that the alleged 'activity' (energeia) is a seeming coinage, and that 'eudaimonia' usually means acceptability to the gods. There are perfectly good Greek words for 'happiness' and 'activity' if he had wanted to talk about those, and I sometimes wonder (although I wouldn't dare suggest to the learned) whether this passage is not about being true to our proper selves - something like 'well-being is the spirit's life in action according to its proper talent'. This would make it a genuine definition, just not the usual one.

Obviously this is not a book for everyone. For those whom it's for it is a very fine and helpful piece of work indeed.

"definition" the confused concept
By hadi rabiei
one of the chapters of this book is about "real definition".
Robinson believed that the notion of real definition is a confusion of at least twelve activities.some of these activities are legitimate and extremely valuable activities, but we shuld not call them "real definition", and some of them are wholly bad.
real definition as search for essence is a bad activity because it has some false premises.
I wrote a reaserch about real definition in islamic logicians attitudes and addapted it whit Robinson's book.

What Fun!!!
By Betty Jane Housey
Is life a bit mundane and boring? Feel in need of a pick-me-up. Then buy Greta Silver's latest book, QURIKY SHORT STORIES. Greta has an amazing ability to put down her thoughts in a precise and provocative manner. The stories are compelling to read. She brings to life characters from real life but then takes her vivid imagination and adds her own brand of humor. You won't be disappointed in this book. It's not just for women. The gardening story reminded me of my husband and his neighbors standing around staring at their lawns, murmuring, "I have cinch bugs, why don't you? Our lawns are next to each other." I was just paging through the stories and found myself reading them instead of paging. They are that compelling. The stories are insightful slices of life with Greta's hilarious slant, obvious throughout.

Some "Quirky" Things to Think About
By Geri LoPrimo
These stories are delightful, mysterious, weird and yes, "quirky"! An enjoyable read from start to finish. A modern day O'Henry with that twist at the end. Just when you think you've figured it out, well, you haven't! These stories stay with you, making you think about the endings and why people act the way they do. Ms. Silver has a way of building suspense, and then really bringing the ending home! I have found myself rereading a few of them. I would highly recommend this book. An enjoyable read for any afternoon! Once you start them, you can't stop. They will remind you of your friends, your relatives. They will remind you of yourself!

Self Parenting: The Complete Guide to Your Inner Conversations, by John K. Pollard

SELF-PARENTING: The Complete Guide to Your Inner Conversations is the classic and original how-to book defining the concept of "self-parenting." Many of us grew up within a parental environment that did not support our childhood needs for love, support, and nurturing. As adults, we mentally continue the same patterns as an "Inner Parent" that left us feeling alone and abandoned as a child. By beginning the daily practice of positive Self-Parenting, the negative outer parenting patterns taught as a child (and subsequently internalized as an adult) can be recognized and reversed. The foundation of the SELF-PARENTING is the daily practice of the Self-Parenting Exercises, a thirty-minute session of cognitive interaction between the Inner Parent and Inner Child. During these daily half-hour sessions Illustrated In the book, the reader learns how to love, support, and nurture his or her Inner Child as well as increase their awareness of the profound implications of their Inner Conversations in the "real world."

Amazing book that shows you how to self-parent yourself (your inner-child) !!
By Nicole Smith
Wow. This is another classic book (the yellow book) by John K. Pollard. (The blue book is also amazing). This yellow book is all about hearing and understanding the inner conversations (that everybody has) within our minds. This simple, yet amazing, book will help you resolve your inner conflicts...through the inner parent and inner child that resides in all of us. After reading it, you will EASILY learn how to love yourself. Oftentimes, we ask ourselves, do I really love myself. Then, we learn that we do not even know how to define what it is to love ourselves. Questions like: What is an example of how I can love myself?? After reading this book, you will finally know how to love yourself. AMAZING!!!!!!

Self-Parenting: The Complete Guide to Your Inner Converstns.
By Cathy Watrobski caw@dps.state.ny.us
The information provided in Self-Parenting was written with great clarity, which makes this book easy to understand and use. The ideas conveyed here were also done with love and nurturing. Both my inner child and I LOVED the whimsy of the illustrations and large print. It's a very well-written book and a great tool. I've used this technique in the past and found it very helpful. I expect to get back to it in the near future.

Self-Parenting is a self-therapeutic technique that can REALLY transform you!
By Sibel GND
Greetings from Istanbul!

I've found about Self-Parenting (SP) about 323 days ago and today I've completed my 320th SP session (+ 10.5 months). I can easily and wholeheartedly say that my life is not the same since I learned about this profound technique. I consider myself very lucky and privileged to discover SP as well as to meet Dr John Pollard so early in my self-growth journey (5 years in total).

If you really want to "change" yourself and your life, this is the best way that I have ever experienced! When you order "SELF-PARENTING: The Complete Guide To Your Inner Conversations" (ie yellow book) and "The Self-Parenting Program: Core Guidelines for the SELF-PARENTING Practitioner" (ie blue book), you don't only get these books but also a brand new and complete system called Self-Parenting Program. I feel Dr. Pollard's other book "How Relationships Work" would also complement this program to excellence.

In a recent morning session my Inner Child has commented about this Self-Parenting Program as below:

"Learn this, everyone! This is a new language, it is a bit hard to learn it but it is well worth the effort."
"This is the best thing that has happened to me! It gave me a chance to express myself and to be heard by you whereas beforehand I was abandoned. I want to thank you for learning this new language"
"Are you aware how special is this? I am savoring happiness, intimacy, and continuity (consistency) with this program."

As my Inner Child says it is a new but advanced language which promises you many positive changes that you could NOT have imagined beforehand in your life given you follow the program and its guidelines word by word. Or else you will be drawn in the raging river!

Why do I find Dr Pollard's books and SPP so superior and advanced?

First of all, here you are the captain of your life journey and self-discovery. You don't need anyone else in this life journey, only guidance to check if you are at the right track. You finally realize that you "can" and "are" in charge of your own life and your Inner Child. You do actually become your own therapist.

You gradually but surely become conscious of old programmings and conditionings acquired from parents, friends, schooling, culture etc and start to have your own natural self-parenting style that is democratic, loving and caring to your own Inner Child.

As you accumulate more hours of SP sessions which I would describe as the intimate and nurturing setting for Inner Parent and Inner Child interaction, you start to expand this brand new style of treatment to your own Inner Child outside the sessions ie into real world. At some point you stop giving "automatic" or "learned" reactions but rather spontaneous responses irrelevant to past conditions and experiences.

You don't specifically work on your outer relationships in SP sessions, yet your outer relations also automatically improve as you really start to love and care for your Inner Child.

I would lastly say if you are really looking for a "permanent" and right (there are no short cuts here!) solution to your recurring personal problems, you need to read first the "SELF-PARENTING: The Complete Guide To Your Inner Conversations" If you are determined to stay within the rules of SPP and allocate daily 30 minutes to the most important relationship of your own life, you will find all the answers leading to a fulfilling and happy life first inside, then in outside world.

But above all, it's a cracking story.' The full scripts of award-winning Downton Abbey, season one including previously unseen material

Downton Abbey has become an international phenomenon and the most successful British drama of our time. Created by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes, the first season delighted viewers and critics alike with stellar performances, ravishing costumes, and a gripping plot. Set in a grand country house during the late Edwardian era, season one of Downton Abbey follows the lives of the Crawley family upstairs and their servants downstairs as they approach the announcement of the First World War. Fellowes succeeds in not only entertaining his audience with a combination of sustained storylines and sharp one-liners but also in delivering a social commentary of British life. The scripts from season one give readers the opportunity to read the work in more detail and to study the characters, pace, and themes in depth. With extended commentary from Fellowes, highlighting key historical or dramatic details, this book gives invaluable insight, particularly for would-be screenwriters, into how Fellowes researched and crafted the world of Downton Abbey.

Immensely enjoyable - an EXPANDED Downton Abbey!
By Amazon Customer
Julian Fellowes has crafted a wonderful book of the scripts from Season One of the hit show. This includes whole scenes and huge amounts of dialogue that were not filmed or were cut. (These portions are unobtrusively indicated by a bar to the left side of the script.) While some of it may not have been strictly necessary for the show, it's all of great interest to read and expands our knowledge of the characters, their back-stories and the goings-on at the manor. But the best part of the book are the extensive notes, remarks and comments by Lord Fellowes. I learned a lot about English country life and other matters, and it is fascinating to become privy to the creative process of this gifted and entertaining writer. I hope the later seasons are similarly published. Yes, I loved watching the series very much, but I promise you that this fine volume will extend your enjoyment in many directions. A surpassingly fine entertainment!

Perfect complement to the series!
By Corey A. Balazowich
I purchased this book on pre-order after my Downton binge after watching the finale of Season 3 (UK time). I was elated when it finally arrived and dove into it almost immediate because I needed a Downton Fix. Yes, I realize how silly I sound. This script hit the spot and even exceeded my expectations.

I love the way this script is formatted, it runs alongside the series and if scenes were moved around, they are moved around in the script as well so you aren't confused. There are extra scenes included and are easily spotted by a small sidebar alongside it. In addition, there are comments about certain scenes through the book as well as a backstories behind the history of the times and why they did what, even confession a few mistakes they made. There are a few plots that become a bit clearer, including the one that befuddled me the most - what exactly DID Pamuk and Mary do? That answer was worth the book cost alone! Maybe I'm just stupid but I was always wondering how far they went and that is all answered here. Well, I think. LOL

Definitely pick this book up if you are a fan of Downton Abbey. Now if only Season 2's script wasn't SO far off in the distance!

A must have for fans!
By gluvine
I was so excited to see that this book had come out. I love the series and was looking forward to reading the scripts. These are the expanded versions - so there are some added extra scenes and dialogue. There is also some great commentary by the writer that explains certain scenes, character decisions, and historical facts. It also describes the scenes and characters. It is really fun to see what the original thought was behind the episodes that I love so much. I got the kindle version and it is great. I can't wait for the other 2 seasons to come out. I would recommend this to anyone who loves the show. It is also a great way to ease the withdrawl symptoms one has as they finish up a season and have to wait for the next one to come on!!

A Boal Companion: Dialogues on Theatre and Cultural PoliticsFrom Routledge

This carefully constructed and thorough collection of theoretical engagements with Augusto Boal’s work is the first to look ’beyond Boal’ and critically assesses the Theatre of the Opressed (TO) movement in context.

A Boal Companion looks at the cultural practices which inform TO and explore them within a larger frame of cultural politics and performance theory. The contributors put TO into dialogue with complexity theory – Merleau-Ponty, Emmanuel Levinas, race theory, feminist performance art, Deleuze and Guattari, and liberation psychology – to name just a few, and in doing so, the kinship between Boal’s project and multiple fields of social psychology, ethics, biology, comedy, trauma studies and political science is made visible.

The ideas generated throughout A Boal Companion will:

  • expand readers' understanding of TO as a complex, interdisciplinary, multivocal body of philosophical discourses
  • provide a variety of lenses through which to practice and critique TO
  • make explicit the relationship between TO and other bodies of work.

This collection is ideal for TO practitioners and scholars who want to expand their knowledge, but it also provides unfamiliar readers and new students to the discipline with an excellent study resource.

Secrets: A Novel (Blood in the Sun), by Nuruddin Farah

“With Secrets, Nuruddin Farah solidifies his reputation as one of the world’s great writers.”—Ishmael Reed

Set against the backdrop of the civil war in Somalia, this stunningly ambitious novel was a Los Angeles Times Book Review Best Fiction of the Year Selection. In Mogadiscio, the dictator is preparing to flee and clans are moving into the city, which rattles with machine gun fire. Society is collapsing under the weight of its own perversities. Unexpectedly, Kalaman, a businessman who owns a computer store, receives a visit from his childhood crush, who has returned from America to take him up on an old pledge—and have his child. The arrival of his house guest pulls Kalaman back into a past he thought he had escaped, rife with doubts and secrets that go deep into his heritage.

In a dazzling display of storytelling genius, Nuruddin Farah weaves together myth and magic, shape shifters and tribal wisdom, frank sexuality and lyrical prose as Kalaman revisits his own coming of age story and finds the heartbreaking tale of his famliy’s lost innocence amid the ravages of authoritarianism. With Secrets, the culmination of his Blood in the Sun trilogy, Farah draws readers through the rifts that have torn across Somali society and into the culture and mindset of his troubled country.

Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. The first, and still the best
By A Customer
I first purchased a copy of this book when was originally released in 1990/1991. Something about the cover caught my attention. After the first page, I fully agreed with the intro: "In your hands lies a revolution..."
Fourteen years later, I am still learning from this little paperback and have puchased and given as gifts several dozen copies.
I have read through some of the other books ("Setting A Trap for God," etc.), but in my mind, "Prayers of the Cosmos" is still the best. It is simple, direct, and free of the trappings of ego that seem to permeate so many of the other books.
My only "complaint" is that the prayers aren't available in CD, only audio cassette.

Makes my Heart Sing
By S. Clement
Not being an Aramaic scholar, I cannot really comment on the alternative shades of meaning and translations contained in this book, but I can, without reservation, say reading through these words and using the body prayers makes my heart sing. After many months I go back again and again to this book when I want more expansive material for meditations. Expansive, yeah, that's exactly what it is!

Wonderful little book
By A Customer
One reviewer found the difference between the King James version translation and this one disturbing - well yes. That may be the point. This very small book explains how this translation was done - looking at not just literal translation but other layers of meaning. Our Sunday study group (some Christian, many not) found it deeply inspiring and enriching. It brings into sharp focus the patriarchal, hierarchical mindset of King James' translators. They were a product of their times and of whatever political pressure may have been brought to bear upon them. This book does much to expand our understanding and to expand the accessibility and usefulness of the newly translated material
