Among the better finance textbooks I've read.

I have gone through numerous finance textbooks and find this to be the most comprehensive and most accessible text on derivatives. I teach an advanced derivatives course (grad and undergrad combined) based on this text. The book is very easy to follow and it is "complete", it is very much to the point and very clear. The book explains to the reader the fascinating world of derivatives and assumes no knowledge of derivatives beforehand. This book is not just an introduction to the subject, it starts by assuming that the reader does not have any background on the subject but it goes quite deeply into all of the instruments. While it is an academic book with a series of questions at the end of each chapter, it is also clearly written by authors with experience in trading derivatives. The chapter on dynamic hedging, and how options can be replicated by trading the underlying instrument is the best explanation on that topic that I have read. The book explains complex topics in plain English that I find really helps students. I would strongly recommend it to someone teaching a University level derivatives class, or to an investor who wishes to learn how derivatives work.

A fantastic formal study on the medium

If you're looking for an academic study of the creation and techniques of horror video games, this is a great resource. It proved invaluable to a discussion panel I did at World Horror Con.

This is NOT a book if you want a casual discussion on the subject. Buyer beware. Ignore the one-star reviews.

Very dry and dull

I am an avid fan of horror movies and games, and was very much looking forward to this book. I was hoping for some insight into what it is that makes them so fascinating to me, and examples from games to expand on these insights. Although this does exist (at times) in the book at a certain level, it is so high and dry, so boring and dull that it could not hold my interest. Many terms and studies were referred to that I am not familiar with, and therefore unable to relate to. I stopped reading full pages and just scanned them about one quarter of the way through the book, and then just gave up all together soon after. If anyone else has read this book and found that the later chapters or articles were more interesting, please let me know.

This seems more like a book written for other researchers than a book written for fans (and in this case, may be a good reference for students). For me, there are far more interesting articles to be read in magazines and online; I was just hoping this would be a book that collected some of them together. Disappointing - especially considering the $30 price tag for a paperback book.

A pleasurable read!

A delightful collection of tiny stories in a unique genre of flash fiction - a cross between fiction and poetry. As fiction, they tell finished, based on real events, stories, ranging from hilarious to heart-rending. As poetry, each piece is concise, and I can see myself going back and rereading some of them over and over. Beautifully and cleverly written! Loved it.

A must have for crocheters of any level beginner to advanced

This is a wonderful resource tool for everyone from the beginner to the advanced crocheter. I have many of Ms. Edie Eckman's crochet books and find that, without exception, they are extremely well-written and the designs are top notch.

I also own the first edition of this title. That book is about ten years old and I have used it all the time. I was provided a temporary digital copy of the new edition (by the publisher via Netgalley) for an honest and unbiased review. Once I had gone through it, I knew that I would (and did) pre-order the hard copy to have on hand at all times. There was enough update to the book - new yarns and techniques - that getting the second edition made complete sense.

I honestly have not had a crochet question come up which is not addressed in this answer book. The illustrations are not great but the information is definitely sufficient to work through my issues. This is not a pattern book; it is a resource book to find answers to issues you never even knew that you had. While reading through it, I had many "Aha!" moments when I realized that I had been doing something in a less than optimal way.

Whether for yourself or as a gift for someone you know who crochets, this book is a perfect additional to the crocheters bookcase. Though that is a misstatement - it will never sit in my bookcase, it will stay in my bag with my latest project so that it is never more than an arm's reach away from me. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Love the content, dislike the format.

I would have given this five stars for the excellent content if it hadn't been for the way the material is arranged. The question and answer format would have been fine for a section or chapter, but because it's the entire book I find it cumbersome. There are chapters and the helpful info is arranged by topic. I have used my print copy for years as a go-to resource. I also purchased the Kindle version, so I can access the info anywhere. The version of this book for knitting is also excellent.

A Great Reference Guide

I got this book for free from Net Galley and I know I will use this book for many years to come. It is a great reference guide with easy to understand illustrations, for right and left handed crocheter, it will answer pretty much any question you might have, form different hooks, to yarn, patterns and stitches. This book would be great for any beginner or somebody like me that needs a bit of a refresher from time to time, plus I am always on the lookout to master new stitches and this book has it all. A wonderful gift for anybody who loves to crochet.

The Best Introduction to the Celts Ever! Also for the know it alls.

I have read a lot of books on the Celts, as they happen to be a passion of mine. So when a friend of mine asked me to read this book and tell him how acurrate it is, of course I jumped at the chance.

First off this book is great for both beginners in the field and for people who are not, but want to update their information. It has beautiful pictures accompanied with lots of information and trivia.

It talks about all the new ideas that have been discovered lately and corrects a lot of others that have been going around for years.

I bought my own copy after reading my friends and now I use it as a reference for my students ( I teach Celtic History of the Internet).

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to REALLY learn about the Celts and where they came from, and their beautiful culture.

A good introduction but some blind spots

First the good. This is a fairly good introduction to many elements of the lives of the ancient Celts. (The Celts are properly thought of as a culturo-linguistic grouping rather than a group of ancient nation-states.) The author is obviously an archaeologist and approaches a lot of questions from this perspective. A great deal of emphasis is placed on material culture which, is fascinating in its own right, but leaves us with a rather incomplete picture of Celtic life. (Studies in comparative law, mythology, and ritual structure are also important but largely ignored here.)

The book is fairly useful and worth studying as an introduction to Celtic studies generally, but it doesn't really go beyond the introduction level.

A second issue comes with the focus on material culture. Certain important elements, such as the importance of Celtic tribes raiding eachother, get underemphasized yet these are where the main advancements in Celtic warfare came from including the 4-pommeled stirrup, etc. This may leave the reader with an impression of a more unified Celtic confederation than actually existed.

All in all, this is probably the best introduction to Celtic material culture that is written. It is accessible and wide-ranging, but not quite comprehensive nor without blindspots. On the whole, I would recommend it.

David Croteau taught about the sociology of media as an Associate Professor (retired) in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Virginia Commonwealth University. This book definitely helped in my communications course

I used the Kindle version of this book for one of my communications courses and I really enjoyed it. The book was easy to read and follow and it used current events and issues as learning guides. Everything was also easily laid out so that the search feature on my Kindle worked well to find different course material that I needed. I loved this because any time that you can spare when studying is always a good thing.

Great Content, Not-So-Great Navigation

The content was great, but the layout and navigation of the text was cumbersome and annoying. For example, other e-books have a tiled view of the pages or other easy ways to navigate through the textbook. If I want to go to page 50, I literally have to swipe through every page from the beginning or end of a chapter to get to it. Thumbs down.

It would be hard to imagine a better, and certainly a more up-to-date, introduction to the Jewish holocaust and the scholarly controversies it has engendered. Omer Bartov, whose research on the role of the Wehrmacht (German army) in Nazi crimes has helped to shatter many comfortable myths about that key institution, here presents a selection of the best and most searching writings on the holocaust. The selections range from Raul Hilberg's analysis of European anti-Semitism (a reminder that many scholars had isolated this as key to the Nazis' policies long before Daniel Goldhagen made his "discoveries" in "Hitler's Willing Executioners"), to a meditation by Alan Finkielkraut on the Klaus Barbie trial and the notion of "crimes against humanity." Sandwiched in between is a fine overview of the functionalist/intentionalist controversy in holocaust scholarship (the debate over whether the holocaust was primarily the willed result of Hitler and other Nazi ideologues' hatred of the Jews, or an unplanned consequence of war, demographic policy, internecine rivalries, and bureaucratic momentum). Bartov has selected the essays with great sensitivity, and provided brief introductions to place them in scholarly, historical, and human context. A bonus is the inclusion of Primo Levi's unforgettable essay "The Gray Zone," which explores the politically-charged issue of Jews' coerced collaboration with the forces of mass murder. This book is ideal for introductory classes on the holocaust or genocide in general, and as a primer for those who want to find their feet in the scholarly debate, which shows no signs of waning.
