Extremely useful biochemistry text. Yes, USEFUL!!

This book shows how biochemistry courses can be made interesting and pertinent. I love the clinical symptoms and diagnoses boxes. Various biochemical processes are made relevant by linking them to symptoms and diagnoses. Remember in college when biochemistry was essentially a memorization exercise? Not so here. I am not a doctor or med student but I do have 24 hours of bio and take it from me this is a unique biochemistry text. The layout and design of the contents is very good. Well worth the price and deserving of shelf space in your library.

A Cleverly Designed Book

Some biochemistry books proceed to describe metabolic pathways with scant reference to the physiological context in which they occur and then fill the conceptual gap by including a chapter on regulation and integration of metabolism. Not this thoughtful and cleverly designed book. From the start the authors make it clear that they are going to tell us the story in terms of one crucial unifying concept: which pathways are activated or inactivated when we eat or when we fast?
With this approach the reader never loses sight of the big picture, ie, what's going on in the body at any particular time. And then, when we do reach the chapter on integration of metabolism, most of the work has already been done for us: the chapter then operates as a useful review of what we have already been told.
The book does not miss any opportunity to make us think in terms of the big picture, and furthermore, it is never afraid of saying something more than once if it needs to. Just one example to illustrate this point: Lipoprotein lipase. Action and properties of this enzyme are detailed in the context of digestion of chylomicrons (p 497), storage of TAGs in adipocytes (p 512), integration of metabolism (p 561) and the influence of insulin levels on gene expression of the enzyme (p 564).
The early introduction of the fed and starved states is also useful in other ways. The student perceives right away what the point is of learning those endless metabolic pathways and studies them with much more enthusiasm and not just thinking that biochemistry is but an unnecessary obstacle they have to overcome to get to the more clinical stuff (at least I'd like to think so!). Inspired by this book I have organized my course in that way and I am convinced that it is the best approach.

Simple, Lucid, yet encylopedic

This book is different from its contemporaries in many ways. First of all is written in a clinical approach format which is very interesting for medical students. Most of the biochemistry textbooks are dry and vast and difficult to grasp the information needed for a medico.
But the Marks helps to learn to use biochemistry in the process of Clinical Problem Solving. With a lot of diagrams and clear text it is easy understand.
The Clinical Material is presented in the form of real patients.
It is a student friendly text with which you can learn biochemistry in a funny way of solving the clinical cases.
It can be used as a main textbook for self study.
I strongly recommend the Marks for all medical students.

The covers of this book are too far apart

I am stunned that this book is so highly regarded. I read the first 99 pages to discover they had virtually no content other than telling you that EQ is important and telling you what it is. Finally, the content started at page 100 and even then, it was mostly common sense ideas like breath properly, get some exercise and a tip to get help from people with higher EQ than yourself. I didn't buy a book only to have it tell me to look elsewhere for the actual help. The book is purported to do that. If you are looking for something revelatory to help you then this book isn't it. What a waste of time. If you want a book that really delivers I can recommend The Charisma Myth. Now that is special.

I really wish I had read this book in high school and better yet had a course in it. It would have saved me a lot of grief. As a society, we need to teach children how to deal with emotions. I wish I had not taken it out of the library because the code in the back only works for one person. So, I was not able to take the EQ (Emotional Intelligence)test. I may need to buy the book.

I loved it all, but I have picked out my favorite parts of each section:

Self Awareness Strategies:

1. Ask others for feedback about how you handle your emotions and listen carefully to what they say.
2. Weekly or bi-weekly take stock of your life and write down situations that you didn't deal with well and then list which quality that you wanted to honor but didn't. For example:
Honesty is the quality and then write down a situation that I didn't handle well where I wasn't completely honest. The next time a situation like this comes up, I might deal with it differently because I will remember the list.

Self Management Strategies:

1. To prepare for change, make a list of things in my life that could possibly change and write down ideas for how I could deal with that. I really enjoyed doing this and it really has been helpful.

Social Awareness Strategies:

1. Become a great observer. Learn how to sense the mood of a room and check to see if your observations are correct.
1. Listen. Listen. Listen. Don't interrupt.

Relationship Management Strategies:

1. Use these phrases more: "I am sorry." "Please" "Thank You"

good but missing some information

Generally very good however I found the material regarding violence exhibited by battered children misleading. If certain behavior is expected it will be found, however violence is predicted by interviews with criminals who having been caught committing violent crimes blame someone else, (not surprising among sociopaths - blaming someone else is to be expected as not taking responsibility for their behavior is a qualifying characteristic) however taking at face value this information and giving it the credibility of scientific evidence is to give sociopaths more than they merit. As a battered child I am critical of the first presumption that we will be violent, a vicious disservice as after having suffered battering, we become suspect of being perpetrators, truly blaming the victim. I think the author needs to have better work on battered/presumed violent children. For example some professionals believe they are less violent, rather terrified of causing to anyone the pain they experienced, therefore continue to be victims, inviting others to victimize them as well, an aspect not usually investigated, but badly needs to be investigated.

Early Church Fathers, Witness of the Saints, Scripture dialogue of the Church Fathers, Liturgical Year Sermons of Early Church.

The Early Catholic Church Fathers, were men who wrote sermons of the Early Church dating from the First Century onward. Some of these Sermons can be found in the Divine Office (Liturgy of Hours), Office of Readings, which are excellent reading from Saints.
The four volume set covers the Catholic Liturgical Year, prior to 1960. The current Liturgical Year now is split up into Cycles A, B, C.
so the readings will not match the readings in these books.
HOWEVER, I emphasize that they are great writings on the Scriptures, the Liturgical Year events, or spiritual subjects, spanning the life of the Church. What I did was to list from each book, by the Gospel writers, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, the Scripture readings and page numbers on which they were found. This list was then compiled into one master list for all the readings in the four volumes, with page numbers. (It did not take that long). A printed copy was put into each book. So anytime you want to find what the Early Church Fathers said about a scripture, refer to the index list.
On the other hand, you may just want to pick up a book, look at the subject index and read about it. The book was started by St. Thomas Aquinas and for example on a Gospel reading, He took comments from various Church Fathers for each line of the Gospel. Reading it is like sitting at a table listening to the Early Church Fathers comments as they went through the Gospel.
I found myself changing my voice tone, for each person, making it interesting to me. At the end of the section of dialogue, there is a Sermon by several Early Church Fathers on a topic as further reading.
I believe that no one should miss out on the Treasure of information about Jesus Christ's Church and its formation over the years,
discarding any preconceived opinions. The Early Church Fathers writings are not infallible, and sometimes there was a slight difference of opinion on the meaning of a line or symbol, which later was settled peacefully.
Another book, that I would highly suggest is Witness of the Saints-Patristic Readings in the Liturgy of Hours, by Milton Walsh, by Ignatius Press. Briefly, this book has the Early Church Fathers writings in the order of the Catholic Catechism by sections. The Catechism covers doctrines regarding faith and morals of the Church,as well as most everything Catholics believe. I even took the tabs from the Catechism, and put them in the book where the section subjects changed. This helps one find a topic much more easily and read comments from the Early Church Fathers. Catholics and Non-Catholics, and anyone interested in spirituality and how it formed over the centuries will love both of these books.

Do you nurse the fond desire to try your hand--or feet, that is--at firewalking? Go ahead. Tahir Shah writes in this beautifully conceived and executed work of literary travel, "Contrary to popular belief, firewalking is dead simple. The skin on the soles of the feet and the ash which covers the coals are both poor conductors of heat. Anyone can do it."

Do we dare trust Shah's word on this point? Maybe so, maybe not, for, though another character in his book bears the sobriquet, Shah is a superbly engaging trickster. The English-born scion of Afghani nobility, Shah takes his readers on a whirlwind trip across southern India that has at its heart one of the most unusual missions in goal-directed travel literature: namely, to find and learn the art of magic from one of India's greatest practitioners, a mysterious fellow named Hakim Feroze. Finding the master in Calcutta, Shah begs Feroze to accept him as a student; unfortunately, as we see, Feroze does so, though not without hesitation. Shah takes us inside sorcery boot camp, which involves strange drills such as digging a deep hole with a dessert spoon, left-handed; separating dried rice and lentils blindfolded; and catching a dozen cockroaches at once in a small tin mug. In recounting his education, Shah reveals a few professional secrets. For one, the Indian rope trick, that classic of conjuring, is effected not by legerdemain, but by the use of hallucinogenic smoke. The child of Afghan parents living in England, Shah (Beyond the Devil's Teeth: Journeys in Gondwanaland) first witnessed magic at age 11, when an Indian Pashtun named Hafiz Jan visited. Twenty years later, he travels to India to learn the magician's trade from the Pashtun. Hafiz Jan sends Shah to Calcutta to learn from his teacher, a magician named Hakim Feroze, who subjects his new apprentice to tortuous physical and mental exercises before casting him out into the streets to make note of whatever oddities he encounters. Shah learns trade secrets of hangmen and gold scroungers, eats in a restaurant that serves dishes prepared from refuse, visits a skeleton-processing factory, watches a psychic surgeon "operate." Then, accompanied by a 12-year-old scam artist he describes as "a walking crime wave," he travels through India meeting sages, sorcerers, astrologers, mystics, healers, miracle workers and other brokers of the supernatural, including a medium who reads fortunes in eyeballs, a chemist who turns drinking water into petrol and a guru named Sri Gobind who causes Easter eggs to emerge from his ear, candles to ignite spontaneously and flowers to bow to him. Unlike most magicians, Shah reveals the secrets chemicals, props, sleight-of-hand and dozens of tricks e.g., Sri Gobind's flowers perform thanks to chloroform and his symbols of "new life and purity" are Safeway's expired chocolate Easter eggs. Entertaining, fascinating, and occasionally magical (a trick?)

This book has one of the finest first chapters I've ever read: one day a man from India shows up at an English boy's house to protect him. Note that the book is non-fiction. The rest of the book is how the author (who was that boy) many years later decides to go to India to learn how to be a magician like the man who came to him. At times the author seems to purposely act too credulous and think odd thoughts, to the point where you feel he's being that way in order to make for a more mystical read. He's also a bit disingenuous, in that the book implies he gives up a staid life for adventure; judging from his other books, he has never been too bored or boring. It's nonetheless a fun read, as he goes through many peculiar experiences and learns all sorts of strange knowledge about magical tricks and India itself. A surprising and wonderful (though sometimes slow) book.

Surreal indeed!

Tahir Shah is an Englishman of Afghani/Scottish descent who writes what may be a new form: The eccentric maybe true, maybe not true, but true on a metaleval travel book. What I mean by that is that, while the details of his day-to-day experiences may be exaggerated and padded to make the book work with a coherent theme, the facts about the country remain true. I genuinely enjoyed this second book of his that I have read. In it, an 11-year-boy meets the guardian of his ancestor's tomb, learns a bit of magic, grows up, travels to India to tour and meet the guardian again, hoping to learn more slight of hand illusion magic. From there he is referred to his teacher's teacher, who is definitely the archytypical teacher as sadist. As Mr. Tahir learns the craft, we learn a great deal about India, about the travelling magicians, godmen, sadhus, charletans, etc. I found the book engaging from beginning to end and highly recommend it.

Entrancing, but somewhat disappointing

It's a highly entertaining book, full of great stories and some interesting insights into parts of India's culture. But, like the godmen whose stories he tells and whose secrets he gives away, it doesn't amount to much more than entertainment.
The reason that the book is so easily comparable to a novel (cf. other reviews) is that it really has been written like one. The dialogue is almost certainly fictitious and a lot of the events, I believe, have been amended to make better reading. Yes, the book flows and it's a pleasure to read, but perhaps it shouldn't... some of the grit that I was expecting is conspicuously absent.
As much as I enjoyed the book I think that it was missing some of that squalor and detail and that could have made it a truly brilliant book. The photgraphs inside the book are marvelous and Mr. Shah does touch on some issues that are truly heartbreaking (his experience with the witch-hunt, for example); but he never seems to get to the core of the connection between the misery and the illusions.
The book bounces between quaint travelogue of aspiring illusionist and notes from a naive westerner in India (some of his cries of indignation at the conmen he comes across make him sound like a complete fool: I hope they're fictional). But between that there are moments of brilliance and I won't deny that I was entranced by the book.
I certainly recommend it, you'll be telling the stories that you read for weeks; just don't expect any... magic.

A very nice instructive book, but a missed oppurtunity.

If I had never read an instructive tome on drawing comics before, I'm sure I would find this very impressive. Being that there are several out there already, this feels like a missed oppurtunity.
First of all, the presentation is rather lackluster. For a medium as dynamic as comic books I believe the design of the book could have been a bit more interesting. It's all fairly standard and not all thay dynamic.
Of course the content is what counts the most, and there is a lot of worthy elements presented here. The problem is most of it has already been presented in other books, like the excellent How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way. The beginning section on the history of comics is the exception. It is both interesting and useful and hasn't been done in this paticular type of book before to my knowledge. The dissapointing part is that it would have been very interesting to see how a master like Kubert creates his illustrations. We are given tantalizing tidbits, but it could have been much meatier. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the final section. We are treated to the original script for a short lived character called Ragman. We get to see the rough layouts and there are interesting, but many of the pages are reproduced at a greatly reduced size. It would have been great to see some more comments as to WHY Kubert made some of the storytelling choices he did and reproducing the actual, final pages of the story seems like a bit of a no-brainer. Alas, neither of these things are done.
Definitely buy this book if you are interested in a career in comic books. It provides a solid foundation, but it is a far cry from the seminal, complete book for aspiring comic book artists we have been waiting for.

a GREAT book on this subject

This is one of the best books on comic style art that I've ever read. Like many people, I taught myself to draw reading comic books. I do other types of art now, but sometimes I find the need to return to my roots, and I couldn't have picked a better book. If nothing else, this is a lot of fun! The only shortcoming of this book is that it covers a lot, but doesn't go into detail on everything.

I thought this book was great and helped me a great deal but, after reading other books like this it doesnt have the style and ideas that artists use today.The books ideas are rather boring and you will lose intrest if you dont like his ideas for characters. Though if you do finish this book as I have you willbe amazed at how much this book helps your drawing ability.

Professor DeGloma is awesome and even if you're not taking his Sociology of Cognition course I would still recommend that you at least read the book!
