Building on the framework first outlined in The Idea of Public Law (OUP, 2003), the book conceives public law broadly as a type of law that comes into existence as a consequence of the secularization, rationalization, and positivization of the medieval idea of fundamental law. Formed as a result of the changes that give birth to the modern state, public law establishes the authority and legitimacy of modern governmental ordering.

Public law today is a universal phenomenon, but its origins are European. Part I of the book examines the conditions of its formation, showing how much the concept borrowed from the refined debates of medieval jurists. Part II then examines the nature of public law. Drawing on a line of juristic inquiry that developed from the late sixteenth to the early nineteenth centuries - extending from Bodin, Althusius, Lipsius, Grotius, Hobbes, Spinoza, Locke, and Pufendorf to the later works of Montesquieu, Rousseau, Kant, Fichte, Smith, and Hegel - it presents an account of public law as a special type of political reason.

The remaining three Parts unpack the core elements of this concept: state, constitution, and government. By taking this broad approach to the subject, Loughlin shows how, rather than being viewed as a limitation on power, law is better conceived as a means by which public power is generated. And by explaining the way that these core elements of state, constitution, and government were shaped respectively by the technological, bourgeois, and disciplinary revolutions of the sixteenth century through to the nineteenth century, he reveals a concept of public law of considerable ambiguity, complexity, and resilience.

Do you need a little nudge in day? I recommend this book!

I am a 51-year-old woman in transition. So right now I need a steady stream of reinforcement on how to love myself and others during this time. I purchased my copy several weeks ago and already it is dog-eared with my favorite or insightful passages.

The parts I love about this book are the stories from others (like myself) walking their journey; they share their own experiences and insight which resonates with me. Another part I love is that you don't have to start at the beginning, I jumped to the topic that was most important to me and have read it over and over. I love the topics written in the book because they are specific to real life experiences. At the same time the "Tips" serve as examples on how to apply certain ideology to a situation.

This is the kind of book you carry with you always; pull it out when you have a little time on your hands, or when you made time to specifically read this book! Additionally, it is easy to carry around because it has a hardcover and it's small; it fits nicely in my purse too, I carry a medium size one!

The book was written simply and too the point. I would recommend it to anyone going through the process of learning to love themselves, and to those who would love to have something easily accessible for moments of inspiration and consolation and validation.

LOST 20lbs and they're STILL gone three months later after reading this book!

I am 48 years old and hate to admit it, but I have had a love affair with food for most of my life. I wasn't exactly grossly overweight - I just constantly carried an extra 20 lbs or so and because I'm only 5'1", they tended to show! With my metabolism recently slowing down with age, the extra pounds were particularly difficult to shift. There had been two or three times in my life when I actually got to my ideal weight.... only to put it all straight back on…. plus an additional couple of pounds.

Needless to say, I was excited to be offered the opportunity to be a test reader as this book/manuscript was being developed since I was hoping it would help me in my situation - and it did!

You see, upon reading this book, I realized that I had fallen in love with food! And now that I’ve written it down in black and white - it sounds ugly!

Throughout my life, diets would always start on Mondays (after I had binged all weekend) and if I messed up during the week (whether it be overeating or missing a workout), I would give up and eat WHATEVER I wanted….. until Monday. Thus the cycle would begin all over again. (Too bad if I tripped up on a Tuesday… because Monday’s a LONG way away!). I loved my food and would wake up in the morning planning to eat the left-over lasagna or Thai curry in the fridge from lunch, or think in advance what I would eat for dinner. I'd plan what I would order at a restaurant on date night well before the night arrived. I enjoyed my food… obviously a little too much!

But the good news is that with the tools Monica has outlined in this book, I have fallen OUT of love with food. Monica’s journaling of how a skinny person thinks and approaches food has been nothing short of mind blowing. For me, it was a case of simply understanding the battle going on in my head and changing my thinking! No money was needed, no diet plan was required, it entailed no one else’s help - all it needed was me and a change in my thought patterns. How amazing is that!

Over the past 10 months I have lost a grand total of 23 lbs AND IT HAS STAYED OFF for over 3 months now. I occasionally hop on the scale and always jump off grinning from ear-to-ear…. and I have that deep down reassurance that it is gone for good. That has NEVER happened before in my life. I'm not even worried that it will return because there has been such a huge shift in my thinking that my love affair with food has finally been conquered - done!

And there have been some HUGE, wonderful side-effects. I feel healthier and lighter. I exercise regularly (because that is simply what a 48 year old needs to do to stay healthy). My confidence has soared and I love everything about the new me - my new weight, my new figure, my new character traits that have been developed, my new thought life…..

My husband is totally intrigued - we have been married nearly 30 years and he knows my history of constant battles with my weight and has observed my occasional weight loss victories, only to witness the return of those pounds I fought so hard to lose. After seeing my weight finally under control and staying constant for over 3 months, he asked me the other day if I could sit down and write him a diet plan. I simply smiled and said, "I never used a diet plan. That's not what the book is about. You need to read it for yourself." (I would not do it justice trying to explain it myself - the author does it best!)

Deep change CAN happen and I am excited to apply her principles not only to food, but to other areas in my life as well. For me, this book was like the "missing manual” which was the key to any REAL life-long change. If you are at a place in your life where you're fed up with contending with constant weight gain or putting it all back on after you've worked so hard to lose it, this book is a MUST for you! I HIGHLY recommend it!

I have long known "what to do" as far as ...

I have long known "what to do" as far as working out and eating well to lose weight. I have had success, but as pounds would creep back on, I felt there was something missing. My relationship with food was still a struggle and I didn't know how to break that until this book. This book brought so much clarity and freedom. It gave me the tools to finally keep that weight off and not forever be obsessed with my weight.

Excellent book and written in such a an easy to digest way:) Definitely a book I would recommend to anyone who has a desire to be free once and for all from food & body image struggles. It teaches you to overcome and lead a life of victory. Very well written with personal stories that are relatable and at the same time offers you practical ways to achieve true freedom. I also love that it is a "skinny" book and doesn't take too long to read, for those who are intimidated by lengthy books. Buy a few extra copies too because once you start reading it, you'll realize you want to gift it to many people in your life. Cheers to being #happyhealthyandfree

Really enjoyed this series!

I reviewed each book after I read it and decided to post all three combined in this review. There are really no spoilers, but if you like to go in blind you may not want to read the reviews for books 2 and 3 until after you've finished the first.

I will say that I really enjoyed this series and looking forward to reading the 4th book next. I can see what all the fuss is about when people talk about Ethan Blackstone!

Here are my individual reviews:

Naked

So a few weeks ago I came across a picture of a list of the best book boyfriends and the more hearts beside their name the better they were, well Ethan Blackstone’s name was on this list and there were like a million stars next to his name. I didn’t know who he was but I knew with an endorsement like that (especially when he had considerably more hearts than some of my all-time favs!) I just had to see what this Ethan Blackstone was all about! Well after finishing this first book in the series, I have to say, now I know what all the hearts were for!! Ethan was awesome! He wasn’t just your typical good looking, controlling, powerful billionaire he was actually very much like a real dude and I found it very easy to fall for him. He was definitely all of those things I just said but he had this other side to him where he was brutally honest (okay except for that one thing…), wore his heart on his sleeve and was playful. He definitely went after what he wanted and didn’t really take no for an answer he didn’t go about it in a jerky way and when he messed up or crossed a line he was quick to apologize (and he meant it). I mean how can you not fall in love with him with lines like this:

“What did you bring me from your shopping? I hope it’s a sweet,” he said, reaching for the Boots bag. “I like Jolly Ranchers. Cherry is my favorite-“

Adorable! And I loved this little twist, this normalcy, that the author gave his character. It was a refreshing change for a book in this genre. This book was quick and really served to set up the start of their relationship and hint at some of the secrets and darker things that are lurking from their pasts as well as some current dangers that I think will play big into the rest of the series, or at the very least the next book. This book did end with a cliffhanger but luckily the other books are out so there’s no waiting to see what happens next and the way things left off I am very excited to see what’s next.

I thought this book was well written and set the stage for the rest of the series. I loved Ethan and Brynne and despite the fast pace of their relationship I felt their connection and I loved them together. I loved their conversations and the easy way they had about them, the dialogue was very fun and realistic, it was super cute and also super-hot! Now that Ethan Blackstone is on my radar I’m looking forward to spending a little more time with him and his “American girl”!

I’m off to start the next book, but I’ll leave you with this part that made me laugh:

“If I told you any more, I’d have to kill you, ad that would just blow my promise all to $h!t.”
“What promise?” I asked innocently.
“That I’m not a serial killer.” He said as he popped a piece of steak into his beautiful mouth and started chewing.
“Thank the gods! The idea of eating a plate of beef with a serial killer would have totally killed this date for me.”

All In

If you thought Ethan was great after reading Naked, then just wait until you read All In! This book was a real treat because unlike book 1 it was told entirely from Ethan’s POV and I LOVED that! I thought he was the perfect mix of rich, powerful alpha and a normal dude after reading the first book and that thought was validated even more after spending a whole book inside his head. I loved seeing his jealousy and possessiveness and his alpha ways balanced with his goofier, normal side and I especially liked when those two sides collided. Like when Brynne got a text from someone who Ethan was convinced wanted to sleep with her and Ethan wanted to send a threatening text back signed ‘Ethan w/ a big knife’ Ha! So hilarious, especially when he found out who that person really was. There were so many moments like that where I was either grinning or laughing because of his inner musings, the author really captured his personality perfectly in this book.

This book picks up right where Naked left off, with Ethan reeling from Brynne’s reaction and trying to figure out how to make it right. The poor guy was a mess, I loved when he went to visit his dad though. Seeing Ethan with his family throughout this book was super sweet. His dad is pretty cool. As badly as I felt for Ethan, there were also comical moments as well as he tried to think up different schemes to win Brynne back. My favorite was him trying to use his lion fish for this purpose:

“She loved you, Simba. Maybe if I tell her that you are pining and off your feed she’ll come back.” So I was talking to fish now. How in the hell had I got to this lowly point?

How can you not love that? I don’t know whether it’s Brynne or Ethan who narrates the 3rd book, but I’m secretly hoping it’s Ethan (or at least a switch between the two!). In the first book we got a bit of what happened in Brynne’s past and not much at all about Ethan’s demons, but in this book both are fully uncovered and I loved how supportive they were of the other. They may be a little messed up individually, but together they just work. It’s not perfect, there is jealousy and misunderstanding but it’s not drawn out and they deal with things in a believable manner. The danger to Brynne heats up a bit and we get to see Ethan struggle to keep his head in the game while he’s stretched so thin with his work and with his feelings for Brynne starting to cloud his judgment. The events of this book are building up and I think the next book is going to be action packed, or at least I hope it will be!

I really enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to continuing on the series! This book didn’t really end with a cliffhanger like the first book did but there’s still so much story left, I’m excited to see what’s in store next for Brynne & Ethan’s relationship! Based on the cover of the 3rd book I think I have a pretty good idea of where things are heading and I can’t wait!

Eyes Wide Open

“Are you real?” he whispered, brushing up my face with the back of his fingers in a cherishing caress. “Because I’ll want you forever.”

What an exciting installment in Brynne and Ethan’s love story! This book picks up right where All In leaves off and is flat out from that point on. Much to my delight we continue to get Ethan’s POV in this book, in fact this book is narrated by both Brynne and Ethan. I really enjoyed getting into Ethan’s head in the last book so I was glad to see that we got more of that in this book. I really liked how it switched back and forth throughout, it really helped round out the story and with so much going on for them it was the perfect time to combine viewpoints.

This book really took their relationship to new heights and continued to test them at every turn. There were some misunderstandings and some angst but I loved how committed they were to each other and how they worked through their issues. They both grew a lot in this book and I really loved how they used their trials and tribulations as a means to strengthen their bond and commitment to one another. There were plenty of things that happened in this book that would have torn a couple apart, but Brynne and Ethan fought with everything they had to keep their relationship alive.

The danger and threats that had been building over the past two books really heat up in this book and I found myself holding my breath and I got further in the book because I was worried that things would be hitting he fan soon. I really liked having this added layer of suspense woven in to the overall story of their journey. Some things were a little predictable but there were a few things that caught me off guard and really ratcheted up the danger and kept me on the edge of my seat!

One thing I really loved in this book was seeing a more playful side of Ethan as they spent time with this sister and her family. Seeing him with his niece was the sweetest thing ever and I loved that we got to see this side of him. To me he’s always been the perfect balance of rich, powerful alpha and sweet loving normal guy and seeing this side of him was totally swoonworthy! With all of the serious stuff going on, I loved that the author was able to pepper in these lighter moments and give Ethan some humorous moments to balance it all out. It’s definitely easy to fall in love with him!

I really enjoyed this book, I think it was my favorite of the series so far and I am really looking forward to reading what I presume is the conclusion of Brynne and Ethan’s story in Rare and Precious Things!

If every girl had a man like Ethan! I decided to read this series after seeing many recommendations. I was not disappointed. Loved the honesty and seeing the relationship develop into something real that could be depended on.

Not really what I had hoped for

The reviews are what prompted me to purchase the whole set but after book one I was sorely disappointed. Just didn't feel the authenticity of a real connection between the characters.

Grade 6-9-From the sad and shameful actual destruction of an island community in 1912, Schmidt weaves an evocative novel. When Turner Buckminster arrives in Phippsburg, ME, it takes him only a few hours to start hating his new home. Friendless and feeling the burden of being the new preacher's son, the 13-year-old is miserable until he meets Lizzie Bright Griffin, the first African American he has ever met and a resident of Malaga Island, an impoverished community settled by freed or possibly escaped slaves. Despite his father's and the town's stern disapproval, Turner spends time with Lizzie, learning the wonders of the Maine coast. For some minor infraction, Turner's father makes the boy visit elderly Mrs. Cobb, reading to her and playing the organ. Lizzie joins him, and this unlikely threesome takes comfort in the music. The racist town elders, trying to attract a lucrative tourist trade, decide to destroy the shacks on Malaga and to remove the community, including 60 graves in their cemetery. The residents are sent to the Home for the Feeble-Minded in Pownal. When Mrs. Cobb dies and leaves her house to Turner, he sets off to bring Lizzie home, only to find that she died shortly after arriving at the institution. Turner stands up to the racism of the town. His father, finally proud of him, stands with him-a position that results in the reverend's death. Although the story is hauntingly sad, there is much humor, too. Schmidt's writing is infused with feeling and rich in imagery. With fully developed, memorable characters and a fascinating, little-known piece of history, this novel will leave a powerful impression on readers.

The novel may be too long and detailed for some readers, with every plot strand and character accounted for. But the removal of the Malaga community really happened, and Schmidt weaves that history into a powerful tale of friendship and coming-of-age, adding a lyrical sense of the coastal landscape. Malaga Island retold, a novel of shame and love.

Here is a little gem of a book for young adults and older ones too. Gary D. Schmidt has crafted an ingenious account of a shameful incident in Maine history, the forced removal of impoverished people of color from a small but desirable island called Malaga in Maine. Told from the viewpoint of young Turner Buckminster and interlaced with ethereal descriptions of how the land, sea, and seasons inform the souls of malleable minds, Schmidt weaves a fabric of suspense, shame, young love, bigotry, and the lure of dollar signs can destroy all that is good. Surprises abound, plot twists jar the reader, and the courage of youth carry the story to its surprise ending. This one is a keeper.

Engrossing historical fiction

Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy is a captivating work of historical fiction and is deserving of its Newbery Honor and Printz Honor. The story has two central characters that many young adults will be able to relate to. Turner Buckminster is the son of a Minister who has recently been posted to the small, fictional coastal town of Phippsburg, Maine. The year is 1912, and this is a period where racism and prejudice is still evident. Turner finds himself not able to fit in with the youths of Phippsburg, a situation not helped by the bullying nature of the local Deacon's son. Turner misses his old life back in Boston and frequently dreams of "lighting out for the territories."

It is only after meeting Lizzie Bright Griffin, the granddaughter of Reverend Griffin of Malaga Island that Turner's life experiences a change for the better. The friendship between Turner and Lizzie is genuine and earnest, yet it is frowned upon by the white residents of Phippsburg, given that the Griffin's are African-American, and the residents of Malaga Island are viewed with animosity and prejudice by the white population of Phippsburg.

Turner is forbidden from associating with Lizzie or visiting Malaga Island, but he finds a way to get around his dad's rules. In the meantime, another crisis is brewing - the residents of Malaga Island have been given a short period of time to move off the island, as the businessmen of Phippsburg have hit upon a plan to develop the island for financial profit.

Greed, prejudice, friendship, and many other themes are explored with a depth of credibility in this exacting piece of historical fiction. The author presents the characters as multi-dimensional characters with depth and not as mere cardboard characters. I highly recommend this story to young adults and fans of gripping historical fiction.

Great Book!

During the English reading series at my school there were several authors that I liked, but Gary Schmidt stood out as an author that I could really enjoy reading. I picked one of his books at random from Amazon and ordered it. It was called Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy. It was about a boy in a small town in Maine where his father was the new pastor. The story was brilliantly written with unflinching honesty since it is from the perspective of the young boy. The boy isn't prejudiced, and doesn't know how or why to be. The whole story is interestingly hinged upon the fact that he's not used to underhanded pitches in softball. If he had only been good at softball he might never have known Lizzie Bright, or made friends with the old women in the town. I laughed out loud several times during the book but also admit that I cried a little bit at the end of the book. It wasn't unnecessarily sad or tragic, but rather kind of honest and real. The good guys don't always win, and justice doesn't always prevail. I will be keeping this one on the shelf for my kids to read as soon as they get old enough. Gary Schmidt is a wordsmith, but you get so enveloped in the story that you don't notice it. You only notice the characters and feel like you know them. That is a rare enough thing for an author to be able to accomplish. I highly recommend this book to any young reader and their parents.

Very Enjoyable.

This fourth story in the series is quite the thriller. It kept me turning pages to see what was going to happen next.

Although those in law enforcement in this age are against the idea of any sort of 'espionage' against it's own populace, and the idea of a 'plains clothed' policeman is untrusted and unliked by it's leaders and citizens, there are some times when ways into the underground of London's criminal class can not be breached by those in uniform. Police Commissioner Sir. Richard Mayne finds himself having to ask for help from sources he neither likes, nor trusts, but it may be the only way to stop a killer, and possibly a revolution. When the criminals follow no rules, and the Police are expected to be above board in all things, can the public really be protected? It's an interesting dilemma for the times.

This story brings back ex-detective Williamson and his friends Dyson, Benjamin and Cullen to work together behind the scenes to stop a mysterious killer, and a stop plot against the government itself. The four men, who have forged a friendship and a working relationship of sorts through the first three books, find themselves being asked to step in to help solve a case where only those who can traverse the darker side of London can find the answers. Detective Inspector Albert Newsome is also involved, but as a working Detective his view of the help given by untrusted outsiders only aggravates his need to prove himself, collides with his ideology of police work, and interferes with his personal vendetta against an old adversary. He provides even further complications in solving the case by his unwillingness to accept help and his need to prove himself.

The case soon becomes personal for Williamson,Dyson, Benjamin and Cullen as the four men find themselves targets and in deadly danger along the way. These are men who've come to rely on each other through past adventures, and who are finding that following rules isn't always the best way to get at the truth.

I highly recommend reading the first three books, "The Incendiary's Trail", "The Vice Society", and "The Thieves Labyrinth" in order to get a complete feel of the story line. There are many things that are introduced in earlier books that continue here, and to miss those will be missing a good deal of the atmosphere of the story.

I'm very much enjoying this series, and look forward to more adventures by the four men involved.

Complete Cookbook of American Fish and Shellfish

It is very clear that this author knows and understands fish and shellfish. The reference materials about the different types of fish with nutritional information was very helpful.
However, this book is very difficult to use. One has to go to several different sections of the book to complete a dish. For instance you must first read the section and complete a fish fume in order to make a volute sauce, in which to complete the fish dish with a mornay sauce.
The setup of this book could be enhanced with page number references next to the ingredient that requires preparation from a receipt in another section of the book.
I am not unhappy to have this book in my collection simply for the reference information on the differenct seafoods. However, this book is not for a novice cook. Even for someone with advanced experience around the kitchen with excellent resources for fish and shellfish, this book falls short of my expectations for enjoyment of use, due to its difficulty in having a receipt's critial components on multiple pages.
