"Diving Physiology In Plain English" A book review by Edmond Kay, MD

Dr. Jolie Bookspan has been listening to her students for years, patiently finding the best way to get across difficult concepts of Human Physiology. Many of her students hated science, and with good reason. It can be so dry, especially when poorly taught. She had to develop new tricks to impart her knowledge, but more importantly she had to learn new ways of germinating interest in the subject so that her ideas would bear fruit. With this book, she has virtually redefined the art of teaching by exploiting humor as a form of "synaptic glue" seldom used in a serious scientific text. Her wit is fun and richly layered. That is what makes this book so compelling. She makes science delicious.

As you can see by now, I enjoyed reading this book immensely. It turns out to be one of the most valuable books in my collection for a number of reasons. First, as the manager of an interactive Diving Medicine web site for the University of Washington, I often find myself trying to teach Diving Physiology on-line to divers with a variety of backgrounds from the absolute neophyte to the scientist/colleague. Take for instance the subject of Immersion. After reading the chapter titled "Effects of Immersion," it struck me that those effects are not intuitive. It makes sense after you read it, but information on hydrostatic gradients and centralization of blood volume (Fat-Face-Chicken-Legs-Effect) was not only interesting but also invaluable to me as an educator. This book is not a "Read Once & Shelve Forever" type, but falls squarely into the "Read Often & Frequently Reference" category. In its place of honor beside my computer, my signed copy has started to look more like a well-used phone book than a physiology text.

I reviewed a sample of the most common "Frequently Asked Questions" taken on-line at my web site during the last two years of operation. It is uncanny how relevant this book is. Asthma, barotrauma, compartment off-gassing, decompression theory; it is all here and handled with the skill that comes from years of teaching. I was pleasantly surprised that many popular clinical topics were also covered in much more detail than I have come to expect. "Diving Headaches" (a common topic) was given three pages and is a masterpiece of completeness, as is "Oxygen Toxicity." With few exceptions, there is just about everything a diver needs to know here in fascinating detail.

My only disappointment was to find that the physiology of childhood and adolescence was missing. It would have been particularly relevant to have included it here in light of all the economic pressures to get divers in the water at an ever younger age. I strongly council parents to restrain themselves from pushing their children into the water with SCUBA gear for a few years into adolescence. The criticisms are few, the accolades many.

Dr Jolie Bookspan has written more that just a "handy compendium" (her words). This is an encyclopedia of the most valuable information a diver might want to know. A very entertaining way to learn and teach science. Yes, I do love this book!

About the Author
Dr. Jolie Bookspan is a research scientist in environmental physiology,  the effects on human physiology of heat, cold, altitude, outer space, G-forces, pressure, exercise, injury states, and immersion, sometimes all at once, and has a clinical practice in sports medicine. She completed a post-doc in altitude decompression and two fellowships in cold immersion and sports medicine. She worked almost nine years at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Institute For Environmental Medicine (IFEM), analyzing oxygen toxicity research - studies on hyperbaric, hypoxic, and hypercapnic response to rest and exercise.  For the Navy, worked in the cold immersion laboratory and during Desert Storm was transferred to Acceleration and G-Force Training Studies. She has been guest scientist at an underwater laboratory--living and working underwater,  advisor to The Discovery Channel, and taught anatomy at a college in Mexico in the mountains where the entrance exam was getting up there without a nosebleed.

At long last...

I was never satisfied with the basic explanations of the effects of pressure and depth on the body doled out in the standard course of instruction on Scuba. Finding a comprehensive treatment of the subject in terms everyone can understand became a personal mission. This is the book satisfied my quest for knowledge about the physiology of Scuba. A doctor explains what we know and do not know of the liquid realm's influence on the Scuba Diver in plain, straight talk. One amazing example is that we have no clue what causes decompression sickness or "the bends". We just know that it is correlated with absorbed nitrogen and that there are a number of models that can predict its onset using this factor. The book includes an excellent explanation of the algorithms used by dive computers to help us avoid this malady, and how they were developed. You will be a much more knowledgeable and aware diver, and therefore a better diver, for having read this book. Add to cart!

The book Diving Physiology In Plain English is without exaggeration the best book on diving I have ever read. Beginner, advanced, technical divers or even non-divers can all benefit from this book. My wife is a non-diver and she read this book with interest and ease. She no longer worries or is concerned about my technical diving. This book addresses the relative full gamete of physiological issues associated with scuba diving. It address issues such as; decompression tables and computers, technical diving, and considers gender related issues between men and women divers. My wife greatly appreciated the information related to decompression sickness, oxygen toxicity, diving headaches, and lung injuries. In addition, I think is also a useful book for divers who are in need of refreshing their diving academics or for divers expanding into other areas of diving. The information in this book is crucial knowledge for any diver. It goes beyond what is learned in any of the certification courses, open diver through instructor. It is an overall informative, valuable, easy to read and enjoyable book. I wish more dive shops would stock it on their shelves.

Great, highly readable book!

This book is absolutely packed with valuable information in an extremely readable format. I highly recommend it for both its' breadth and depth.
When I purchased my copy, I actually received it directly from Dr. Bookspan, the author. Jolie was wonderful to deal with and had a real passion for diving and writing.

Good basic overview of Jun Fan Gung Fu's basic striking

Jeet Kune Do Kickboxing is a good overview of the basics of Jun Fan Gung Fu in the kicking and punching range. If you're already a Jun Fan / JKD student under a qualified instructor you probably won't get anything really new out of this, but it is a good reference for those of us who aren't good about taking notes. My only complaint is that the basic stance and footwork are only given about a page and a half, and IMO, those are two of the absolute most important things as they are the foundation for everything else. If you don't have a good stance and good footwork, everything else falls apart.

A good basic guide Jeet Kune Do kickboxing training techniques.

The late Bruce Lee studied numerous martial arts in the development of his Jeet Kune Do approach to combat. Kickboxing was one of the combat arts he studied. The authors both studied under the legendary Dan Inosanto, who was Bruce Lee's top student. The authors emphasize that "this is not a book on techniques" but rather just one way of looking at a particular combat method. The areas covered in this text include: A brief history of the Jeet Kune do kickboxing approach, basic hand tools use with equipment, the JKD stance, foot weapons, how to attack with combinations, progressive indirect attack, defensive tools and other training drills are demonstrated. One of the areas I disagree with in Jeet Kune Do is their use of the strong side leg and stong side hand forward in their kickboxing and fighting method.

In conclusion, this is a good basic introduction to Jeet Kune Do Kickboxing, which will be of interest to most martial artists.

Good but not good enough

This book offers a glimpse at Jeet Kune Do principles as they are applied to the sport of Kickboxing. The focus mitt drills as well as the other drills are explained correctlly but the poor photography really doesn't reveal the tecniques in the best form. Also this book was written in the 80's as a current Asst. Instructor in JKD I can tell you that the techniques and strategies in JKD have changed quite a bit since this book was written. For a better read pick up Principles of a Complete Fighter by Ron Balicki. It gives you a good view of current JKD training and strategy

As an atheist, I can appreciate...

I'm a former evangelical Christian minister, now atheist/humanist. I celebrate what I think is the net affect of this book--it puts tools in the minds of its reader to find common ground with those we've previously otherized, to expand the space of the talk-aboutable, and to elevate humility and empathy. I interviewed Dark on the 90th episode of the podcast Everyone's Agnostic, which I named after a phrase I borrowed from another of his books, "The Sacredness of Questioning Everything." Dark's genius is so good for what is ailing us.

Rarely have I read such a profound commentary on contemporary religious culture in such a beautifully written form. By turns humorous, deeply serious, whimsical, and philosophical, Dark's book is a powerful reflection on the inescapability of "ultimate issues," even in an increasingly relativistic culture. The book is ideal Lenten reading, joining in my mind works like Kathleen Norris's and Marilynne Robinson's in prompting a turn to soulfulness--to what really matters.

“We’re in the presence of a catastrophically unexamined concept.”

There may not be a more desperately needed discussion at this moment than what David Dark attempts to invoke here. "Life's Too Short..." is an invitation for honesty and empathy – a call to a, dare I say, sacred responsibility to eschew over-simplification in order to see and better understand ourselves and others, thoughtfully. Those who take objection to Dark's choice of "religion" to name our worldviews, mythologies and devotions (recognized or unrecognized), say far more about themselves than the author's intent. You 'gotta serve somebody', and you can't exit culture. As Dark says, "We're all in it." So the subject of religion, of our religion(s), doesn't have to be a label or a dead end, but rather a perpetual opportunity for conversation and self-examination, and ultimately for love.

more on the useless, than the useful

How typical. The art community, as inefficient as expected. A whole chapter on drawing materials - in detail! So overkill. Who cares about prices, sheesh, who's unable to search prices on line for art material prices themselves? Two or three pages would've sufficed, or just a table with websites to look them up on yourself. The anatomy parts, like the one on the human skeleton are woefully short. Many more pages have gone into explain in small detail how you shouldn't get too used to one brand of pencils. Because the company that makes them could go out of business, and then you might need to find pencils of a different company! Who would've thought! That's going to make you the next rembrandt to know!

And much text on lamps, setting up a studio. For pete's sake. That's information that isn't relevant until down the way. People buy the book because they want to learn to draw, not because they're dying for info on what kind of drawing pads there are, and which one to get (almost anything will do in the beginning anyway).
The skeleton is shown from 3 angles, and the 3/4th view is only talked about. Much is just talked about through text. Some chapters are better than others though, but still lack in detail - just not as much as some of the others. For instance, the part on rendering the figure by putting together simpler shapes is far, far, shorter than that on how drawing pads can be expensive, and how it's bad to use a flat desk! Or how pencils are relatively cheap, duh. What's explained by author is that it's not recommended to use square shapes, but instead use angular shapes to represent the body parts. But no details or recommendations on which shapes to use for the what body part, not even which the author favors, and why. How is a beginner supposed to know? Ok, don't use squares, use angular shapes, but for what, what muscles? Apparently, most of that energy and page estate went into details on what rubbers, pens, lamps, ergonomic chairs, desks etc to use! A fat chapter on that alone. Whereas, just a few pages on each anatomy topic.

Also, some things are explained in text, that pretty much demand complementing pictures. Like a list of technical skeleton bone names, and text descriptions on where they're located on the body, and where they join with other body parts, without picture references!

Example (not saying this is accurate) "The femur holds up the body and is slightly angled, and then connects with the ulna". But where's the picture reference? Nowhere, what a joke. Drawing is a visual subject.

This book is not a bad book. The author explains that this isn't an anatomy book. You have teach yourself and it may require some research out of the book, but it has a lot of reference material.

I just don't know what to say. This is one of the strangest books I have ever read. And the names of our H/h...Adam and Eve? Really? Adam left to become a music sensation and Eve failed to show up at the bus stop to go with him. She was nothing but a coward.

Adam comes back twelve years later...and Eve has eleven-year-old twins...and a huge secret. She married a very controlling man who has ruled her and her children's lives and she has finally divorced him and he has remarried but his word is still the law...over her and the children. The children that are not his.

This was just awful. I'm not sure where this writer is from but the laws in the US are absent from this story. He has raised them but he is not the bio dad. Her former love is. But he has ordered her not to tell him and not to go near him or he will take her children away. She weakly and sickeningly kowtows to his every demand. Furthermore she is going to allow her ex to continue sharing custody after she marries the love of her life and why on earth would a mother let a man so callous and controller help raise her children? What on earth was wrong with her. They even decided the children would keep his last name instead of their real father.

I wanted to chuck Kindle and all through the window. If there is something I despise in books it is extremely weak and pathetic heroines and she takes the cake.

I, in good conscious, cannot recommend this book. It was the weirdest story I have ever read.

Great till the end

I really enjoyed this book up until the end. I felt like the ending was rushed. I did not care for the attitude of Eve's ex and was so glad when she finally stood up to him.

I'm too far down on the food chain to appreciate the Illuminati

Yes I bought this; I like to read and I kept getting people send me stuff and follow me on Twitter. So, since I like to study religious cultures, I gave this a try.
Lots of it is a positive message, but it was the whole, "You aren't a true sentient being without our behind-the-scenes guidance" was unnerving. I don't like being told that if I wasn't part of the higher echelons of a greater scheme, then I never would be. I teach my children that there are ways to make a greater impact in this world, and there are ways to improve your socio-economic standing, but this book walled everything in. That is to say, it made explicit references to the little people that are needed at the bottom, and the movers-and-shakers who make the rules at the top. It gave no "instructions" on how to become one of these movers-and-shakers, it just said you either are, or you're not. Bull.
I could actually write more text about why this book bothered me than the actual amount of text contained in the book. It only took a very short time to read it. I read it again, thinking maybe I missed something, but I got disgusted the more I trudged on.
Coincidentally, to give this a fair shot, I also signed up for their emails, and "applied" to be part of the organization. I never received anything that said I was "approved" or "denied", but I sure got a lot of emails asking me to buy different fake metal versions of their talisman pendant. Oh, and one congratulating some socialite on her nuptials. I gave it about 8 months for them to complete their 30-60 day review of my application. Then I unsubscribed.

Maybe I'm just not worth enough to them to invest in me. *shrugs*

From A (Former) Illuminati Skeptic

Let me start this by saying that I'm not the typical audience for this kind of book. I'm really not into spiritual things or secret societies or whatever other tag you want to pin into this... I read this book so I could make fun of it but now that I've finished it I think the joke is on me.

To understand why I'm giving Illuminatiam 5 stars you have to know my full story so bear with me. Randomly last year (after a few glasses of wine, full disclosure) I googled for "official Illuminati website" to see what would pop up. Not surprisingly there are 100s of websites claiming to be the Illuminati but unlike all the others that looked like bygone Geocities junk, when I clicked the one at the top I was surprised to discover a cleanly designed page claiming to represent the "real" Illuminati. Weird. So I dug deeper. The more I dug the further I fell into this Illuminatiam rabbit hole that you're about to discover.

You can look it up for yourself so I'll skip the details but remember that was last year. I really didn't know what to think of it but it was weirdly authoritative. I couldn't stop digging. I think part of me kept checking their websites and social media (yes Illuminati is on Twitter, who knew) in the hopes that they'd say something glaringly obvious that'd point them out as a bunch of online trolls and prove my skepticism correct.

After a while of inactivity, Illuminatiam posted a TV commercial on Youtube. It got hundreds of thousands of views and hundreds of comments in a week. ONE WEEK. In the video, they mention something called Illuminatiam without explaining what it is. So, randomly, again, I searched Google and I found this book last week.

This is where it gets weird. There was absolutely no promotion for this book anywhere yet or any mention of it on any of their websites, but that's definitely the same Illuminati logo. Scared that I'd found something I wasn't supposed to that would disappear, I quickly ordered a copy. The next day as I expected, the book was taken off Amazon (reappearing only this afternoon).

I got it in the mail yesterday morning. I don't think I believed it'd even arrive until it did. I read the entire thing all in one sitting.

And wow. What a book this is.

It's tough to describe. The back cover says it's a guide for humanity to "all that is ahead" alluding to some great event that is about to happen on earth. The book itself is divided into 11 chapters with 11 FAQs answered in between (How do I join the Illuminati? Does the Illuminati worship Satan? etc). The chapters are written almost in the format of letters describing how the Illuminati stays in power, how regular people can improve their lives and actually deep and compelling self-help advice.

Again I started reading this book to find something wrong that would finally prove the website and everything else was a fake. But the book is a masterpiece of suspense without even intending to be. It calls itself a "testament" and I completely understand why. It's a parallel with how followers of Jesus have the old and new Testament, now the followers of the Illuminati have the Illuminatiam: a bible of sorts with wisdom for the modern world and a warning of things to come.

Even if this book is a complete satire, I realized by the end that it actually opened my eyes to a lot of things. We have been told the Illuminati isn't real and anyone in intelligent, not-tinfoil-hat cultures who speaks of them uses it as a joke. But wouldn't that be the most cruel irony, that the real Illuminati remains in power because they have convinced the smart people of the world that they don't even exist, that we don't need to look for them or pose any threat to their power by sticking our noses into things they want us to keep out of? It doesn't matter if you're a skeptic or a believer, reading this book will change your mind about a lot of things in the world and give you hope for what's on the way.

Not credible, a waste of time, treasonous

The book was well written but not credible. It states that the Illuminati have been guiding people throughout human history. Evidence? None and the group wasn’t even formed until 1776 by Adam Weishaupt in Bavaria. They try to defend a viewpoint that they are above criticism and deserve the ability to blackmail world leaders by disclosing personal information. So what is the requirement to be one of of these self appointed guardians? Their website states that the best candidates are those who have accumulated $1 million or more, land holdings etc. Now considering that the rich are known to: give less money to charity than the poor and that corporate executives have the same personality traits as sociopaths we see that this is just a group of mega-rich individuals who know nothing about ethics and world governance but get their kicks feeding their egos by enforcing their whims over companies and governments that affect billions of people. Examples of their actions would be: World Bank demanding that people impoverish themselves by privatizing water, so much to the extent that people aren't even allowed to collect rain water, black ops and false flag ops by the American CIA the start wars by planting fake terrorists, and the passage of aspartame and Roundup-ready pesticide as safe by the FDA when these are rejected in Europe. What is the light? It isn't specifically stated but within occult circles the light refers to the Luciferian god of the Yazidi, a religion that encourages possession by demons and promotes pagan magical blood ritual practices (see the movie Eyes Wide Shut). We see this promoted all over the music industry with music videos promoting magical rituals or referring to multiple personality induction (known as MK Ultra, also see the movie the Manchurian Candidate).

But it gets worse. As the biggest intrusion of privacy ever committed the book states that they have bugged every computer. They use an ends justify the means argument by claiming that this is necessary for security but it is completely against the American right to not have unreasonable search and seizure without a court warrant, and that is from elected officials, not a group of rich thugs. So if you support this group you are committing treason against the ideals of freedom and democracy. Rather than leadership through transparency we see a cabal of holier than thou billionaires who look down on ordinary workers and seek to ensure their own survival by indirectly killing as many as possible. Illuminati related companies promote materialism and magic to a widespread audience, leading them astray with silly anti-science concepts yet they claim to eschew magic and to be in the process of providing unlimited free energy. None of their points make sense and the book isn’t of any practical use. People supporting it are just pandering to the group hoping they will be accepted and get free money from them but except for the few who are useful due to celebrity status most will never gain real status. Because the group hasn't produced any evidence supporting their denials it mainly is a book of hot air. They also are in the business of selling Illuminati merchandise (a gaudy necklace as well as this book and branded clothing) which they ask you to wear in public. Given this and their Facebook responses, they are not to be trusted.
