In 1871 Japan sent a high-ranking delegation to the USA and Europe, to negotiate treaties and trading agreements and to investigate how it might modernise its political and economic institutions. Led by the Foreign Minister Prince Tomomi Iwakura, the 'embassy' of politicians, courtiers and officials travelled extensively around the USA for eight months, before spending a further year examining the British manufacturing industry, German armaments and French culture. The Iwakura Embassy helped change the course of Japanese history, for the official report of this journey, compiled by Prince Iwakura's personal secretary, the Confucian scholar Kunitake Kume, was to play a key role in Japan's transformation into a modern industrial nation. The report was translated into English in five large volumes in 2002. This carefully prepared abridgement makes it accessible to a wider range of scholars and students, and to all who are interested in the remarkable rise of modern Japan.

Amazing historical journal.
By Brian Gammill
This is a one-of-a-kind experience. Somewhat like De Toqueville's "Democracy in America", "Japan Rising" provides a fascinating historical perspective on America, as well as several European countries. Here's the context: Japan has been suspended in time after nearly 250 years of isolation during the Tokugawa shogunate. After Commodore Perry's visit in 1854, Japan is humiliated into signing an "unequal" treaty with the United States. This leads to a revolution and the restoration of the Meiji Emperor who is determined to elevate Japan and match the strengths of the world powers. To do this, they must learn from the West. This is the mission of the Iwakura Embassy, a group of senior diplomats and some of Japan's finest youth (such as Ito Hirobumi, who served as Prime Minister of Japan 4 times), are sent for a lengthy tour of the industrialized nations of the world. From late 1871 until 1873, their views of the world are unalterably changed. Starting in the Wild West of the United States, they document their observations of so many facets of society, industry, government and culture that themselves had only recently been transformed by the effects of modernity, industrialization, and nationalism.
This was an important historical document that contributed to the formation of modern Japan. It has only recently been translated into English, giving us a great resource to view the early 1870s from a most unique perspective. While this has obvious value to the research scholar, the translation of this journal is remarkably readable and provides a most entertaining read for just about anyone who enjoys authentic history.

Glad I have come across this book
By Tatsumi Morizuka
Very enlightening! Should have read the book 50 years ago. The original book was written in an old style Japanese and published about 140 years ago. Glad I have come across this book, an English translation abridged version at Amazon.com. The book very vividly and minutely reveals how the Iwakura Embassy found the USA and the leading European countries in 1871-73. The book could have served as a very helpful guide book as well as sort an encyclopedia of the countries visited if you had been around that time. Very impressed by the great efforts put into writing the book and the easy-to-understand English translation. I find very interesting the comparisons made between Japan and the other countries in terms of
history, culture, customs, religion, industrial development, etc, etc. in early 1870s.
